Sadia and I met denim collectors David Cheng, Patrick Siu, Gary Kwan, Kenny Chiu, Victor Chu and Ricci Lau while we were in Hong Kong teaching Denim Design at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) in November 2023.
We were invited to dinner one evening, and after dinner, these collectors started pulling out vintage from their backpacks. I just stopped them, as I immediately recognised most of the pieces from denim and workwear auction sites. I was blown away by the quality of what this group of friends had collected. One of the collectors showed me his phone and scrolled through what seemed like a never-ending collection of incredible pieces.
That evening, I made an agreement with them that ENDRIME® would publish a series of books about the collectors. We returned to Hong Kong soon after, hired a photographic studio, and started cataloguing the Vintage Style Research archive.
There are many denim and workwear collectors and archives around the world, but most are behind lock and key or behind a paywall.
I've been fortunate to see many collections in my career as a denim designer these past years. As a Denim Educator for over 20 years, every student and university always asks me what a great archive book or resource they should buy, and my answer is always the same: there are not many readily available archive books.
Our mission at ENDRIME® is to try and document these archives for educational resources for future preservation and never be out of print.
I'm just glad these Hong Kong denim friends took us out for dinner, as it turned out to be a very special evening for Denim Education and preservation. Volume 2 has also been photographed and will be published in April 2026.
